Valerie Pence

Valerie Pence is the Director of Plant Research at the Center for Conservation and Research of Endangered Wildlife (CREW) at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, Cincinnati, USA. The Plant Research Division of CREW uses in vitro and cryopreservation methods to address the challenges of the ex situ conservation of endangered exceptional plants—species for which traditional seed banking is not an option. Her interests include developing, adapting, and applying the ever increasing number of techniques available in plant science to the conservation of endangered plant species. She is particularly interested in the development and physiology of plants in in vitro systems and in how the natural adaptations of species relate to their growth in vitro and survival through desiccation and cryopreservation.
